Useful mapping utilities

Postby Horizord » Fri Jul 02, 2010 2:09 pm

Here's some useful utilities for those who are new to mapping or otherwise haven't come across these programs yet.

Pakrat - Made custom models/textures/sounds for your map? This is your best friend. It also allows you to pack your <mapname>.txt files into the bsp so people don't have to download them seperately.

GCFScape - Ever wanted to see what files are inside those gcf packages? Well, with this you can and you can also extract files from them, too.

VTFEdit - Want to use your own textures in your map? Well, this utility will allow you to convert your image files to VTF, a image format the source engine can understand.

Propper - This compile program replaces vbsp in your hammer expert building configurations (Recommended you make a new config for this one), and instead of compiling your vmf into a map, it turns it into a model! Useful for overused and quite detailed brushes in your map.

Source SDK desktop gadget - For you Windows 7/Vista users, here's a nifty desktop gadget that allows you to run hammer, faceposer and modelviewer without having to run the Source SDK first (You need to have it installed and run at least once, though). Saves on time, effort, and system performance.
